Porch Sittin': An exploration of how we record, keep and measure time by watching the sun set and fall.
Artist and Archivist, Sierra King investigates how the southern practice of sitting on your porch provides time for reflection, gratitude and record keeping in a world where the demand to be productive in a capitalistic society leaves little room for rest and rejuvenation. When met with intention this practice can evolve into a ritual that is essential to an artists' making of their work and development of their interior worlds. King is guided by the primary sources in archives of Lucille Clifton, Octavia Butler, bell hooks and Toni Morrison who provide decades of insight from their lived experiences colliding with systematic barriers. Porch Sittin' is both the refusal of social constructs and reminder of our humanity.

This free workshop is limited to 20 participants. Sign-up will be available on site beginning at 12pm.
Understood to be one of the oldest forms of historical preservation, oral histories are a powerful way to gather and preserve the memories and stories of our communities. They can also be a powerful tool for social justice. Grounded in Black Feminist teachings, Sierra King, Founder and Principal Archivist of Build Your Archive will lead this workshop, specially designed for artists. We will gather to share stories, learn best practices, and discuss guidelines for trauma-informed approaches, and more. Utilizing your personal photographs as your guide, you will create an audio recording of memory as it appeared to you. You will also receive tools and resources to continue to Build Your Archive in real time and create a personal workflow that you can replicate in your Grandmother’s living room.
Participants: please bring a printed photograph, album, or digital version on your phone or other device. You are encouraged, but not required, to register with a storytelling partner.

Your books derserve portraits too. this is a multi-modal documentary project that aims to capture the reverance of text within the black feminist theory and across the diaspora. sitters select or bring their most sacred text to be photographed. it is our aim to collect moments of collective memory include looking up from your book when reading or noticing someone reading a familiar text.

THE MEMORY KEEPERS
THE MEMORY KEEPERS is an exploration of the archival praxis’ of fore-mother, grandmothers, sisters, comrades, filminist, muralist, printmakers, cultural workers and organizers before us and among us. It will guide you through you on memory keeping practice through a photographic description writing exercise. As well as provide additional examples of how you can maintain custodial databases in your living room repositories.

INTIMATE PORTRAITS WITH YOUR MOST SACRED BLACK FEMINIST TEXT
A photo booth for intimate portraits with your most sacred feminist text.
You can arrive between the hours of 12p and 4p. Sierra will be available and on call to make your photograph.
This is a free flowing event where every sitter will have 30 minutes after choosing their text to have their photograph made. While waiting for your seat you can browse the bookhouse, purchase books to add to your library or relax outside.*
COVID Precautions will be taken every hour and masks are recommended.
